I definitely find the interface aesthetically pleasing: it’s colorful, legible, easy to use and not overly busy. So let’s see how it fares on these points. This type of instrument needs to be usable without a manual. For this happen, a couple things are required for the approach to work well: 1) the interface is to be aesthetically pleasing and easy to use and 2) the parameters either have to make a clear audible difference or be well enough labeled to understand without extensive trial and error. To put it in plain English: it’s designed to be fun, to encourage experimentation and not just rely on the loaded starting point of each of the patches. If I put on my software design cap for a second, I would say that Sound Forest positions itself a procedural exploration instrument, not entirely unlike Sonic Charge’s Synplant paradigm, but with very different source material (sampled vs synthesized and at one-eighth of Synplant’s price to boot). Each note has at least 3x round-robin (some articulations offer up to 5x), with up to three dynamics layers, depending on from which articulation the sample is pulling. If you take a look under the hood, you’ll find the samples sorted into 30 macro categories with extra groups for the round-robins. Each preset presents a different starting point from an array of parameters and FX (including some granular processing) and eleven keyswitches (usable whenever you aren’t in “plant” mode to modify parameters). If you listen through all the presets, you’ll notice that there a number of basic sounds, with a lot of variations on them (as opposed to 32 completely unrelated sounds). The library comes with 32 patches: roughly ten with longer sustains or decays and 22 more percussive ones. 25% of each sale is donated to charity and the library is inexpensive with an eye toward experimentation and the unusual so it’s got a lot going for it right out of the gate. The library emphasis is on bowed and mallet timbres, which range from extremely sound-design-oriented (sometimes almost pure FX rather than melody or harmony-focused) to a sound akin to world instruments (not unlike certain ethnic flutes or melodic percussion instruments).

Impact Soundworks Sonic Forest ($20 USD from ) is multi-sampled sound design and exploration library for the full version of Kontakt (version 5.3.1 or higher). For your consideration: unusual bowed and mallet timbres for a mere $20 with 25% going to charity – unusual, easy to use and fun.
